Sacred and Daily Patterns

Ivonne Ferrer

2nd August - 19th September | 2024

As is customary, the prestigious Women in the Arts Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas is proud to present to the art lovers in its community, and indeed to the entire community of artists and enthusiasts across South Florida, the latest creations from a distinguished group of female artists working throughout the state. This year’s selection focuses on those who regularly or full-time explore the realm of geometric abstraction. The four featured artists—Ivonne Ferrer, Gloria Lorenzo, both of Cuban origin, and Delsy Rubio and Adriana Huerta, born in Venezuela—hail from a country where this artistic form has flourished in a particularly unique way. Each of these artists, through meticulous lines, bold shapes, and vibrant colors, challenges conventional boundaries and invites the viewer to engage with the profound beauty and complexity of geometric art.

Contemporary geometric art continues to be a dynamic force in the art world, constantly evolving and adapting to new technologies and cultural contexts. This style is characterized by precise geometric shapes, clear lines, and a carefully curated color palette that, though often limited, is thoughtfully chosen. Yet, despite its apparent simplicity, modern geometric art explores complex ideas and emotions, prompting the viewer to find meaning in form and color.

Many contemporary geometric artists are incorporating interactive and digital elements into their works. They employ design software, 3D printing, and augmented reality technologies to create pieces that can change and adapt based on viewer interaction. No longer confined to painting and sculpture, today’s artists are experimenting with large-scale installations, videos, and mixed media to push boundaries even further. Immersive installations that combine light, sound, and geometric forms are growing in popularity. Environmental awareness has also influenced contemporary geometric art, with some artists exploring the use of recycled and sustainable materials, creating works that are both visually striking and ecologically responsible. Increasingly, these artists collaborate with communities and professionals to integrate art into public spaces and revitalization projects.

Geometric art today remains a fertile ground for innovation and expression, reflecting both the rich history of the form and the new directions and possibilities of the 21st century.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

IVONNE FERRER

There are a number of traits that emerge in her works and may be seen as part of a consistent vision to create a unique and surreal narrative through paint, collage, and appropriations from a variety of sources that descend from popular culture, Cuba’s remarkable graphic tradition, and the world of mythology and literature.

Like Alice in Wonderland signified for Lewis Carroll both a confused exterior world she encountered on her travels, and her own fragmented behavior ever fluctuating between fantasy and reality.

Ivonne Ferrer uses her imagination to relate her own personal narrative based on life’s and art’s experiences.

Using a Neo-Pop system of appropriation with comics, photographs, advertisements, and other literary sources as material for idiosyncratic messages that may be understood by the artist alone, Ferrer seduces the viewer into partial understanding, further confusing her bizarre narrative.

There appears to be a symbolic language that meanders through the works and unites the selection of imagery – from the statuary to the literary.

It is this control, a formalistic skillset, that Yvonne Ferrer brings to works that express the surprising accumulation of images for the purpose of transcending the real world, as much as annexing so much of it as the chance encounters of time and place.

GLORIA LORENZO

In searching for synthesis through geometric abstraction, I discern the interconnection between spirituality and the mysteries of quantum physics.Creating color planes intersected with lines that, like maps, guide the trajectory of the shapes and the eye of the beholder. Geometry, light and shadow, space and depth reflect the substantive world through concrete figures in my work, which is the search for the elements of the genesis of universality.

Gloria Lorenzo’s work explores the geometrical concept, space, and light through vibrant oil canvases and sculptures in diverse media including  ceramic, cement, and wood.

She has exhibited in art fairs and is in museum collections, including Context Art Miami 2021 as a solo artist and at the Coral Gables Museum, Coral Gables, Florida.

She has participated in worldwide exhibitions such as Parallel Currents at the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame and prestigious fine art fairs such as Art Miami, the FIAL International Latin American Art Fair, the ARAFI International Fine Art Fair, and the MA-D Art Fair in Miami, Florida.

Gloria Lorenzo was born in 1954 in Santa Clara, Cuba. She obtained an MFA from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Art in Havana, Cuba.  In 1991, she immigrated to Miami and resides in Coral Gables with her business and life partner, Mercedes Palomo.

DELSTY RUBIO

Multidisciplinary visual artist Delsy Rubio was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where she successfully completed her studies in Plastic Expression, with a focus on Drawing and Painting and Graphic Arts, at the “Julio Árraga” School of Plastic Arts (1979-1985). From an early age, her love for art provided her with a prolific career as a graphic designer and entrepreneur, acting as Art Director in advertising campaigns, an experience reflected in her current work with a distinctive style. As the creator of the graphic image for the International Art and Antiques Fair of Maracaibo (2004-2011), she consolidated her passion for art and design.

In 2011, she began her artistic proposal with a discourse of geometric, monochromatic, and minimalist abstraction. For the development of her work, she is inspired by intangible themes, exploring the perfect geometry of nature and the relationship between humanity and the universe, using different technologies, techniques, and materials such as wood painted in automotive acrylic and aluminum pigmented by molecular transfer at high temperatures. She creates sculptures that stand out under the light, showcasing volumes and multi-level forms with reflection effects and the displacement of interrupted lines in space that connect harmoniously.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous recognitions, including the Honorable Mention at the Chess in Art Salon of the Centro de Bellas Artes Ateneo de Maracaibo in Venezuela in 2014 and the Second Prize at the “Origins in Geometry” Biennial in Dallas, Texas, organized by the only Museum of Geometric & MADI Art in the USA, a prize that gave her the opportunity to be part of the museum’s collection in 2019. In 2023, her work was recognized with the Honor of Merit in Sarasota, Florida, USA.

Delsy Rubio has participated in numerous exhibitions, both individual and collective, in Venezuela, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Peru, and Spain. Her work is found in private collections around the world and has a permanent exhibition in Doral, Florida. She has been published by curator Despina Tumberg in the book “XI Contemporary International Master,” and interviewed by various media such as “Conexiones” magazine, “Doral Voice” radio, “Voces de Marca” radio, and “El Venezolano TV”. Additionally, she was the subject of an article in “Art Journal,” the Italian art magazine titled “Delsy Rubio is the wind and the color” by Michela Turra.

ADRIANA DORTA

Visual Artist, born in Caracas, Venezuela. She has great passion for Geometric Abstract Art. From early age, while living in Paris, she developed an inclination towards the arts inspired by the effects of light through shades and colors stained glass in France’s old cathedrals, like Chartres and Notre Dame-en-Vaux. Since 2015, Dorta has successfully exhibited at important art shows throughout the US and abroad. In 2017, she achieved a great success at Art Palm Beach with her artwork Totem Series: Native Dreams, a theme recurrent in her Art conception also today.

It is interesting to highlight that geometric art has been one important tract in the art of native cultures in The Americas as well as in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. It is remarkable the versatility on how Dorta recreates her own Geometric shapes and lines, making a ‘fusion’ of them with her unique effects of the light perceived trough endless spaces.

Her achieved perspectives capture and give great emotions to the viewers of her artworks. They are composed by one or multiple pieces that combine among them and can be displayed horizontally or vertically.

Dorta uses for her Art delicate combinations of grays, silvers, gold, black or white, often accompanying them with the addition of one or more bright colors to create a vibrating effect and impact, making each work a unique experience to enjoy. Her work has evolved into a more multi-disciplinary approach towards the viewer, achieving an interactive, vivid, almost mechanical visual effect that leaves spectators with 3D visual illusions without the use of electrical or mechanical components.

This exhibition is made possible thanks to the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.
