Under the Art in the Community program, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas actively participates in the tribute to the recently deceased Manuel Comas Labrada. Starting Friday, August 30th, Miami's artistic community, along with friends and family, will have the opportunity once again to appreciate several of his pieces, all abstract works, displayed alongside those of his friends and the organizers of this event, Rubén Rodríguez and Carlos Llanes.
Rubén Rodríguez in Francisco Bernal's workshop, signing a series of serigraphs on canvas. Circa 1999
With impeccable academic training, he began his art studies at the Elementary School of Plastic Arts in 1975, graduating in 1978. He continued his education at the San Alejandro Academy from 1978 to 1982 and completed his higher studies at the Higher Institute of Art, specializing in Painting, in 1987. From 1985 to the mid-90s, he worked on various projects, including murals, billboards, posters, books, and designs, alongside the renowned Cuban artist Raúl Martínez. Later, he actively participated in different social projects, including donating works for humanitarian auctions.
His pictorial work is characterized by two fundamental aspects: eroticism and abstraction. In both, he left a very personal mark that distinguishes him from many other creators of his generation. In abstraction, the developed series present both the intense use of color in some cases and metallic, steely, and cold tones in others. His painting is generally characterized by a material quality.
